MiaouIRC, Java version compatibility
For Linux
You can either use the Java provided by Sun or the one provided by the Blackdown vendor.
If you are experiencing window positioning problem or the like, try another window manager or another VM (Blackdown or Sun). Just do the same, if you have some keyboards focus problems.
I have experienced some window problems when using Blackdown on the Sawfish Window manager, but no problem with Afterstep, WindowMaker and Enlightenment.
For FreeBSD
Just as Linux, you can either use the Java provided by Sun or the one provided by the Blackdown vendor.
You can also try the Diablo Caffe JVM 1.3 for FreeBSD. But if you are experiencing window sizing problem, try the linux-sun-jdk13 ports I just use this since the Diablo Caffe might have some GUI problems ...
For Windows
It is recommended that you have a JVM higher or equals than 1.3 Sun provides a 1.3 JVM.
Or you can just use the 1.4 VM if you already installed a Java version.
From now on, I have encounctered NO window problems NOR keyboard focus problems ...
Major differences between Java 1.3 and 1.4
- Scroll wheel mice are not supported on Java 1.3 .
- Some fonts might look tiny with Java 1.4 (see "About") .
- For Linux and *BSD, Java 1.4 is recommanded as it is optimized on heavy tasks such as filling the nick list on channels .
And more ? ...
I don't know if there are other VM that supports the Swing API in order to launch MiaouIRC ...
If you find out how to run with another VM, please contact me to the email address at the bottom of this page, as I am very interested in running MiaouIRC on a VM under the GNU General Public License.
